Luis Alturet-Rivera, who had to be extradited from Washington State has been arraigned on charges that include murder for his alleged role in the January 2017 murder of his one-time girlfriend, Diana Casado, in Yonkers.

Alturet-Rivera was charged by a Westchester Grand Jury with murder, criminal possession of a weapon, and two counts each of grand larceny and criminal possession of stolen property, all felonies.

It is alleged that at approximately 3 a.m. on Jan. 22, 2017, Alturet-Rivera shot Casado in the head while she sat in her car, which was parked in a Palisades Avenue lot, where she regularly parked.

Hours later, Casado’s mother found her, still alive, and paramedics rushed her to Jacobi Hospital in the Bronx, where she was pronounced dead.

Westchester County District Attorney Anthony Scarpino, Jr., said that a surveillance camera near the site of the shooting captured Alturet-Rivera with Casano’s pocketbook, which had her credit cards, wallet and other personal effects.

A second camera showed Alturet-Rivera minutes later throwing the purse into the dumpster to make it look like a robbery, Scarpino said.

While the initial investigation was ongoing, Alturet-Rivera fled the state and later became a person of interest. The Yonkers Police Department cold case team continued to investigate, and tracked Alturet-Rivera to Washington. He was extradited from the state in February this year.

Alturet-Rivera was remanded into custody and scheduled to appear back in court on Jan. 7, 2020.
