William Anderson, Former Greenwich Police Chief

William C. Anderson, a former Greenwich Police chief, died May 21 of complications after cardiac surgery. He was 67.

Anderson graduated from St. Mary High School and Iona College with a degree in criminal justice. He served in the U.S. Navy as a submariner and joined the Greenwich Police Department in 1970, becoming its 11th police chief in 1986.

Anderson retired in 1990 and was appointed a U.S. marshal for the District of Connecticut by President George H.W. Bush. When his term ended, he took the position as head of security at Clairol in Stamford and retired in 2008. Anderson served two terms on the Greenwich Representative Town Meeting and served on the boards of the Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich and the Boy Scouts of America, Greenwich Council.

On May 14, Anderson was honored by Iona College with the Brother Arthur A. Loftus Award for Outstanding Achievement in Criminal Justice.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Fred D. Knapp & Son Funeral Home, 267 Greenwich Ave. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church, 178 Greenwich Ave. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Donations in Chief Anderson’s memory may be made to the Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich, 4 Horseneck Lane, Greenwich, CT 06830.
