Advanced students will perform two classical ballets, “Les Sylphides” set to Sergei Prokofiev's music and excerpts from “Romeo and Juliet” set to pieces of Frederic Chopin. Students from levels one through eight will also perform Lauren Etter's “Symphonic Progressions.”
Michael Vernon, the school's artistic director and the co-choreographer of the “Les Sylphides” segment, said the show is important to the students.
“Being coached in an iconic ballet such as 'Sylphides' not only connects the student dancers with the great dancers of the past - such as Pavlova and Nijinsky - but improves and hones their techniques because of the demanding elegance of the choreography," he said. "This is definitely one of the most haunting and beautiful ballets ever choreographed.”
Heather Hawk choreographed the segment along with Vernon.
Etter's piece is designed to show the growth of younger dancers, Vernon said.
“In addition, having choreography created especially for them allows these young dancers to experience the creative process first hand, and expands their horizons of experience," he said. "This is how dancers grow and develop.”
There will be a 10 a.m. performance for schoolchildren as well.
Tickets for the 7 p.m. show are available at the theater box office by phone at 203-325-4466 or online at www.scalive.org. Prices range from $10 to $50.
