STAMFORD, Conn., -- The Bacon Brothers were in the rain, to borrow one of their song titles, at Wednesday's opening concert of the Jazz Up July series at Columbus Park in downtown Stamford.

But Kevin and Michael Bacon had to interrupt their performance for an unscheduled 15-minute break as rain pelted concertgoers, forcing them to pull out umbrellas, take refuge under vendor tents or, in some cases, pack up and leave.

The show resumed at 8:30 p.m. with Kevin Bacon cracking a couple of jokes about the weather.

"You people are all hardy whaler stock," he joked referring to the state's whaling history. "A little rain isn't going to faze you."

The break also gave some thrilled fans a chance to exchange a few words with the Bacon Brothers as they prepared to restart their set.

The rain didn't deter Chris and Birgit Schinell of Darien, who took refuge under a tent. They decided to wait out the storm even as a river of water along the street crept higher and higher, eventually soaking their feet.

"We really like him and his wife, Kyra Sedgwick," Chris Schinell said of Kevin Bacon and his actress wife, who starred in the television series "The Closer."

Bacon is an acclaimed actor who has starred in "Footloose," "JFK" and "Apollo 13," among other films. He currently stars in the television drama "The Following." His musicianship came as a pleasant surprise to Chris Schinell.

"He's even more talented than I thought he was," Schinell said approvingly.

Music returns to downtown Stamford on Thursday, as the Alive@Five concert series kicks off with K.C. and the Sunshine Band.

Schinell said he's impressed by the lineup of acts this summer at Columbus Park and said he expects to take in some more musical acts.

"This year looks like a real good lineup, so we may come more often," he said.
