Weston's Lunch Box: A New Owner, An Old Name

WESTON, Conn. -- The Lunch Box may be under new ownership, but owner Josh Tolk doesn’t think that will stop patrons from visiting the restaurant that has served Weston for the past 37 years.

“We basically kept the product line that was here and brought it to a new level,” Tolk said. “It’s a new restaurant with an old name.”

The restaurant, located on Weston Avenue in the center of town, was purchased by Tolk and his wife, Jessica, on April 30. Josh, who is a Realtor, and Jessica, a teacher, promptly shut down the breakfast, lunch and dinner spot and began construction on May 5 before reopening in July.

“We basically gutted the whole thing and built it back up. We wanted to give it more of a restaurant feel,” Josh Tolk said.

With a couple fresh coats of paint, wood floors and tables, countertop seating and mason jars rather than glasses, the couple said they created a more “homey” feel to their newest investment.

“We wanted to create a country feel, a small-town feel, but new and modern,” Jessica Tolk said. “It’s really where country meets modern.”

But the new look isn’t a sign of major changes to the restaurant. According to the 50/50 owners, the Lunch Box still serves most of the same foods it did before the parents of two took over in April.

“We still have coffee, ice cream, and a lot of the sandwiches our customers love, but it's more of a place to sit down and eat now. Before, it was mostly takeout and delivery,” Josh Tolk said.

Although the couple is looking to serve the community that has kept the Lunch Box around for more than three decades, they are adding new and exciting things to their menu.

“We now serve wine and beer on tap,” Jessica Tolk told the Daily Voice. “We have four wines and beers each on tap. It helps us keep a small footprint.”

Admittedly, just two-and-a-half months into their new business, the couple is still looking to fine-tune their restaurant.

“We want to become a destination,” Josh and Jessica said. “But we are perfectly content with making the Lunch Box the best it can be.”

The Lunch Box is open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Although they do not have delivery, signs at the front counter advertise they are looking for help to bring back the once popular service.

Customers can also connect via its Facbook page.

“We’re at a time right now where people aren’t sure if they can tell us what they like and what they don't like,” Jessica Tolk said. “But we totally welcome and appreciate comments and feedback. It’s a big help.”
