Uber Gets The Greenlight To Help Drivers At New Hub In Stamford

STAMFORD, Conn. — Uber opened a new office in Stamford to help its drivers, and a city official points to it as an example of the city's growing tech community.

Thomas Madden said the Greenlight Hub, a central help facility for Uber’s drivers in Connecticut, also plays a role in making Stamford more attractive for businesses.

"We are absolutely thrilled to have Uber here in Stamford. This is definitely a signal of our growing tech community within the city itself," said Madden, the city's Director of Economic Development.

"We had a couple of companies come in to Stamford and they were absolutely impressed with the fact that Uber set up an office here because a lot of their employees use Uber, and they know right away if there are any concerns they can come to the office here and get support for their employees."

Matt Powers, general manager for Uber in Connecticut, said new and current drivers can use the office to speak with an Uber employee about any questions or concerns.

"So whether they have questions about how the software works what our policies are, if they have a specific question about a trip they were on they come here and have one-on-one personalized assistance to have those questions answered," he said.

The new office is located at 470 West Ave. and will be open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Powers said that based on past experience in meeting with drivers in other venues, he believes it will be heavily used by drivers.

"We expect hundreds of partners a month to come by and see us," he said about the drivers.

One of those drivers is Soraya Nims-Berry, 52, of Stratford. She worked from home doing databases and spreadsheets, but she had a dry spell where none of her contract work came in. After weeks with no income, she decided to check out driving for Uber.

It came at the right time for her. Not only is she paying her bills but it also gives her the flexibility to take in her son's sporting activities, Nims-Berry said.

"I am at every football game and every track meet. I don't miss anything and I love it," she said. "I can do it when I want to."

The Greenlight Hub will serve as a central help facility for Uber’s drivers across Connecticut. Other events will be held there, including training seminars, consultation services for current drivers on work-related issues, and assistance for individuals interested in becoming drivers. Additional spaces will allow drivers to see Uber representatives and outside vendors on matters, including insurance, vehicle maintenance discounts, phone service, and more.

Uber operates 75 Greenlight Hubs throughout the United States, along with 200 facilities where they provide additional in-person support to driver-partners.
