Stamford's Half Full Brewery Brings On New Brewmaster To Craft Operations

STAMFORD, Conn. — Tom Price wasn’t always planning on a career of making beer. At the end of his freshman year at Harvard, he had narrowed down his choice of major to history and literature or chemistry. He chose history and literature.

“I was enjoying my history and literature classes and didn’t enjoy my freshman chemistry class quite as much,” Price said at Half Full Brewery, where he recently took the helm as head of operations.

But now Price is using his knowledge of science to help create new recipes and plan operations of the Stamford-based brewery, whose beer is available at local bars and at the brewery on select days.

A Mississippi native, he began his career in publishing in New York. But he moved to California to intern for San Francisco Brewing Co. while his now-wife attended business school.

Price then moved back to the East Coast to take a position as a brewer at Brooklyn Brewery. He worked his way up to quality assurance and quality control manager of its Williamsburg facility.

Since moving to Connecticut, Price has had to make some adjustments to suburbia. He used to bike from his home in Cobble Hill to the brewery in Williamsburg, for example. He now drives.

Now at Half Full, Price has been developing and brewing two new beers for upcoming events. His favorite is the brewery’s Bright Ale, one of its lighter beers.

“It’s a great drinking beer,” he said. “The longer brewers tend to be in the business — a lot of us, anyway — the more you’re in the business, you appreciate a beer you can have a few of.”

Price was drawn to the opportunity at Half Full because it gave him the opportunity to take on a generalist role. “This is a chance to oversee the entire process from soup to nuts,” he said.

“It’s been great so far," Price said. "Lots of positive changes just in the couple of months that I’ve been here."

Price is not the brewery’s only new hire. McLain Cheney, formerly of Colorado-based Aspen Brewing Co., will take on the role of shift brewer.

McLain graduated from the University of Vermont in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in sustainable landscape and horticulture with a concentration in viticulture.

Half Full Brewery is located at 43 Homestead Ave. in Stamford. For more information, visit its website here .
