“I have no doubt the city will help lead the state going forward in green energy,” Bryan Garcia, president and CEO of the Clean Energy Finance Investment Authority, said during the announcement Wednesday.
The organization will bring its Commercial Property Assessed Clean Energy program to the city and provide $20 million in financing, either up front or long term, for clean energy upgrades to buildings. Garcia believes a lack of financing is a major reason business owners do not make energy efficient changes to their properties.
“I don’t see this program going anywhere, except straight up to outer space,” said Mayor Michael Pavia, who expects the program to reduce energy consumption in Stamford. The city is the second largest energy consumer in New England behind Boston, he said.
Also joining the partnership is Connecticut Light & Power and the Business Council of Fairfield County.
In addition to businesses saving on energy costs, Business Council President Chris Bruhl also believes it will be attractive to business owners because young professionals are interested in green initiatives and participating will open up that talent pool to companies.
