“Today is a major milestone in a plan that has been many years in the making,” Brian Grissler, president and CEO of the hospital said in a news release. “Our goal is to create an environment that will meet the changing needs of patients and their families, as well as our doctors and clinical staff, tomorrow, and well into the future.”

The new hospital will be constructed in a single-phase and cost about $450 million is scheduled to be completed in 2016 to replace the current buildings to accommodate for the latest technology, while delivering care in a patient-centered, environment, the release said. Some of the current buildings at the main campus date back to the turn of the last century, and even with renovations needs to evolve to better serve the hospital’s needs, the release said.

“It will be a significant transformation from the current traditional and institutional feel to a more calming, welcoming environment,” Grissler said in the release.

Mayor Michael Pavia is impressed with the plans of the new hospital describing it as more than just a medical facility, but as something that will attract businesses and people to the West Side of Stamford and benefit the ones currently there.

“This is also establishing a great magnet for the West Side,” Pavia said.

Key features of the new hospital include:

? Private patient rooms and bathrooms.

? Centralized nurses stations for more flexible care.

? Dedicated family spaces on each floor.

? The Emergency Department will have specific areas for: trauma, cardiac, urgent care, behavioral health, and pediatric patients, and the number and size of exam rooms will be more than doubled. There will also be dedicated and easily accessible parking for walk-in and ambulance arrivals.

? Larger surgical suites accommodating the latest technology.

? A new Pediatric Unit in the Whittingham Pavilion adjacent to the current Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

? An expansion of the Intensive Care Unit.

? A central location for all Heart & Vascular Institute services.
