The award is given annually in memory of Stephen F. Zangrillo, Founder of the Darien Sport Shop, who built his business on customer service, loyalty and trust.

Chamber members nominate an employee who best embodies the qualities of Zangrillo for the employee’s unending dedication to delivering excellent customer service and devotion to the mission of the business they serve.

Holder was nominated by Patti Jonker and John Barricelli of SoNo Baking. “He is an example not only an ideal employee but also a young man with character and values beyond his years,’’ they wrote in their nomination letter. “Tyler consistently demonstrates a commitment to his job, our customers and the SoNo Baking Company. He goes above and beyond his duties as manager ensuring customers get the best service and the store always looks clean and inviting and regularly checks in on his days off. A self-motivated worker, he is constantly looking for marketing and product ideas to enhance our existing business. At the age of 22, he not only works for us full time but also attends UConn and manages a household for himself and younger brother. We are fortunate to have him as part of our staff and believe he is the ultimate example of Employee of the Year.”

The DCC Award Selection Committee reviewed the nominations and selected the finalist. The finalist submission was then presented to Susan Cator, DCC Executive Director and Gina Zangrillo of Darien Sport Shop.

Kaye Leong, DCC Board of Directors Chairman, Susan Cator, DCC Executive Director and Gina Zangrillo surprised Holder last Friday. Barricelli and Johnker were also present.
