New Stamford Hospital to Be Finished by 2016

STAMFORD, Conn. — A new Stamford Hospital will be ready by the spring of 2016, a release from the hospital said.

The Board of Directors on Wednesday announced plans to rebuild the hospital in a single phase lasting about 4 years and costing an estimated $450 million, the release said. Previously the hospital planned to rebuild in multiple phases over 10 to 15 years at a cost of $575 million, the release said.

“The rationale behind this decision included consideration of the hospital’s strong financial performance, favorable interest rates, as well as the overall cost savings to complete the plan in a single phase,” Brian G. Grissler, Stamford Hospital’s president and chief executive officer, said in the release.

The hospital now needs the Zoning Board's approval to rebuild in one phase, the release said.

The hospital has secured a $250 million bond for funding the project, and will finance the rest with earnings and donated money, the release said.

The new hospital will include:

? Private patient rooms and bathrooms and centralized nursing stations.

? An emergency department with more treatment rooms and separate treatment areas for different cases.

? Larger surgical suites with the latest technology.

? A new pediatric center adjacent to the current Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

? An expanded intensive care unit with 16 to 24 beds.

? A central location for heart and vascular services, including electrophysiology, catheterization and interventional labs.
