When he’d go out for a leisurely weekend coffee, he crossed the town line to visit Garelick & Herbs — in Westport.

“It’s one of my Saturday haunts,” he said during the grand opening of Garelick & Herbs' new Southport location Tuesday. “Now I can come here.”

After 23 years at its Post Road flagship, owners Paola and Jason Garelicks decided to build the new Southport shop that doubles their space to nearly 10,000 square feet and allowed them to expand their offerings and build a bakery on site.

On Tuesday, they gave customers a sneak peek at the new marketplace, which features a juice and smoothie bar, a salad bar, freshly baked pastries and bread and an extra-long display case filled with everything from stuffed salmon and ginger flank steak to kale slaw and eggplant rollatini.

“This is not just a food market,” said state Sen. Tony Hwang, looking around the bright atrium. “This is almost like Disney World for foodies.”

While they loved their old digs, Paola Garelick said the site needed many renovations and building was a better option.

“We have two levels here and the space was well needed,” she said.

Westport fans can pop over the line or visit the Saugatuck location the couple opened two years ago. They also have markets in Greenwich and New Canaan.

The Southport shop boasts a modern-industrial vibe with vaulted ceilings and sleek ceiling fans and light fixtures. The rear of the store features some refrigerated foods, gourmet cheeses and other snacks to take home, while cooks prepare brick oven pizza and omelettes to order nearby.

Those who wish to linger can choose from a dining space inside and a mosaic patio with a rain garden outside. Paola’s father, master stone mason Gino Vona, created the space as well as the Tree of Life stone designs on the outer walls.

Garelick & Herbs offers a host of possibilities for hectic families looking for healthy, freshly prepared meals in the evening and expanded selections for breakfast and lunch. Cookies, pastries and loaves of bread will be created in the lower level bakery instead of brought in from another location.

“Fresh bread?” said Tetreau. “It doesn’t get any better than that.”

Garelick & Herbs is at 3611 Post Road, Southport. For information on hours, catering and more, visit www.garelickandherbs.com.
