GREENWICH, Conn. -- Greenwich is acquiring a taste for Mexican-inspired food as Chipotle Mexican Grill adds a second location in town.

The company, which already has a local restaurant on Greenwich Avenue, has taken over the former home of the Hunan Cafe in Riverside Plaza off Exit 5 of I-95.

Marcia O'Kane, executive director of the Greenwich Chamber of Commerce, said she learned of Chipotle's plans not long after hearing of Hunan Cafe's decision to close.

"People are looking for a healthy alternative in a fast-food restaurant," she said about Chipotle's growth and popularity in Fairfield County.

She said she has visited the company's Greenwich Avenue and Darien locations and said both are very popular with diners.

But O'Kane said she was disappointed to learn of Hunan's closure.

"It was there as long as I remember, and it always had a reputation for very good food and service," she said. "It's sad to see them go."

The opening date for the new Chiptole is not known.

A call to Chipotle's headquarters in Denver was not returned.

The company has seen explosive growth since the first restaurant was opened in Denver by creator Steve Ells in 1993. The company currently has more than 1,700 locations, primarily in the United States, according to the company's website.
