When Paul Tully and Jay Luther took over Gates in February 2016, they upgraded the décor, the quality of the food and cocktails. There are now new booths and artwork. Food-wise, everything is made from scratch including a much-talked-about dry aged burger, Chop Chop Verona (salad), and Bellagio (sandwich).

Gates also offers a 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. happy hour seven days a week with reduced drink prices and small plates. And, there's live music on Thursday evenings featuring local talent.

Watch out for warm weather when the two patios will open in April.

Some may be surprised to know the restaurant was originally a clothing factory that manufactured clothing for bicycling, a new sport at the time of its inception. It was later the office and gallery of world-renowned architect, Victor Christ-Janer.

Gates Restaurant is at 10 Forest St., (203) 966-8666, www.gatesrestaurant.com/.
